Kate Maruyama was raised on books and weaned on movies in a small college town in New England. She writes, teaches, cooks, and eats in Los Angeles, where she lives with her family.

Her novel, Harrowgate was published by 47North in 2013 and her new novella Family Solstice  from Omnium Gatherum was named the Best Fiction Book of 2021 By Rue Morgue Magazine.

Her short work has appeared in journals including Asimov’s Magazine, Entropy, Arcadia, Stoneboat, and Duende among others as well as in numerous Anthologies including December Tales, Winter Horror Days,  Halloween Carnival: Volume 3, Accolades, and Gathering.  You can peruse some of these pieces and her essays on the Writings page.

She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Antioch University Los Angeles, where she is now affiliate faculty with the BA program and teaches online classes. She coaches individually in writing fiction, non-fiction, and she is available for consult on manuscripts (see Coaching & Classes Page.) She is a member of the SFWA and HWA, and serves on the Diverse Works Inclusion Committee for the HWA. She has served as a jury chair for The Bram Stoker Awards and twice as a juror for the Shirley Jackson Awards. She is editor of the column THE HORROR over at Cultural Daily.
